This year has started off really well. I have 17 students & am looking forward to working with them this year. Almost all of them are very motivated to work & know how to follow the rules & procedures of the class. What I wonder is how to motivate a student who seems like they don't really care. I have one who is repeating the 3rd grade & because he didn't understand it last year he seems very unmotivated to try to learn it this year. How do I convince him that he can succeed? I see so much potential, but if I can't convince him of that what good does it do?
On the flip side I have another student who is doing great. One of the things we are doing this week is to do a reading test with the students to assess their level. Most 3rd graders should be reading on Level L. (A is the lowest level, Z the highest - about what an 8th grader would read). I read with this student today, haven't finished yet, but already we are on Level R! It makes me really excited to be able to work with a student like this. Hopefully it will rub off on some of the others!
